Macron and von der Leyen called on the EU to strengthen the space sector
French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on European countries to more actively develop the space sector, which is increasingly linked not only to the economy and science but also to security.
They made these remarks during an international space summit in Paris. Macron described the European space industry as “fragile” and emphasized the need to strengthen its capabilities and develop joint governance of the sector.
The French president also announced that more than 50 investment agreements totaling approximately €20 billion are planned to be signed during the summit. Among his long-term goals are the docking of the European Nyx cargo capsule with the ISS in two years and the landing of the Argonaut lunar lander in about five years.
In another ten years, Macron expects the launch of the first European crewed capsule from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana. It will carry European astronauts and representatives from other countries.
Von der Leyen called on Europe to expand its presence in space in both the scientific and defense spheres. She emphasized that access to space and the ability to operate there are becoming vital components of the EU’s security and independence.
The European Commission president specifically mentioned Russia’s war against Ukraine. According to her, satellite communications are already playing a vital role for the Ukrainian military, and satellite imagery allows for tracking movements over long distances.
