Meta expands access to AI Muse file system — The Verge

Meta has changed how its AI service Muse works: it now offers, at the user’s request, to view the contents of the virtual machine’s file system through an interactive file browser with access to the root directory. As The Verge reports, Meta’s Nat Friedman called this behavior intentional.

A virtual machine in the cloud

Meta Superintelligence Labs head David Singleton explained in a post on X that Secure VM in Muse is the user’s personal computer in the cloud. According to him, users can install software, write and compile code, and use a browser to view web pages on this virtual machine.

Singleton noted that users can manage their own Linux environment in Muse as they see fit. According to the outlet’s description, Muse’s architecture differs from platforms such as ChatGPT and Gemini: the service is closer to running OpenClaw on a local computer, but the machine itself is hosted in the cloud.

A change in the method of access

A day earlier, a The Verge journalist found that Muse reveals the structure of its file system after certain requests. At that time, the service provided a text file with a directory tree and refused to create a complete archive of the root directory, even without secret data.

Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts said that the company continues to update the product, so the amount of information about the virtual machine available to users may change. Later, Muse began immediately offering a clickable file viewer with access to the root directory.
