Meta unveils audio glasses without cameras and a model for people with hearing impairments — TechCrunch

Meta demonstrated new smart glasses without a camera, as well as an audio model for people with hearing impairments, at its annual Meta Connect event. The glasses became one of the central devices at the event, where the company presents new hardware and products based on artificial intelligence, TechCrunch reports.

Model without a camera

The new glasses, which have not yet gone on sale, are equipped with six microphones but do not have a camera or a built-in ability to record their surroundings. According to the publication, they are lighter than other smart-glasses models tested by the journalist.

The device allows users to listen to music and take phone calls without needing to take out a smartphone. The glasses are also set to integrate with Muse, Meta's personal agentic system that can perform tasks on behalf of the user. The feature, which is not yet publicly available, will allow users to give Muse voice commands.

Users will be able to instruct the agent to send emails or read out to-do lists, as well as ask questions and receive answers. Meta also plans to add the ability to personalize the agent using digital avatars.

Glasses for sound amplification

Another model presented is intended for people with hearing impairments. A representative of Meta's research team told TechCrunch that the device had been developed for about five years. According to him, the glasses will be sold for $150, while some hearing aids can cost as much as $1,600.

During testing, the journalist was asked to use earplugs to simulate hearing loss. After that, in his view, the glasses amplified the voice of the person he was speaking with. Users will be able to choose a focused mode that highlights the sound of the person in front of them, or an omnidirectional mode for perceiving sounds around them.

Meta is expanding its smart-glasses lineup, seeking to combine design, communication functions, entertainment, and practical uses for the devices.
