An island has emerged in the Philippines that will be entirely run by artificial intelligence

The tiny island of Sensay in the province of Palawan in the Philippines, just 3.6 kilometers long, could become the world’s first territory to be fully governed by artificial intelligence. In 2025, the island was purchased by the founder of the chatbot company Sensay, British tech entrepreneur Dan Thomson, who aims to create a microstate with a council of 17 AI agents instead of traditional politicians.

This was reported by the Daily Mail

The idea of a microstate has already sparked global excitement, leading more than 12,000 people to apply for digital residency. The AI agents in the island’s government will mimic the thinking of famous historical figures, including Winston Churchill, Eleanor Roosevelt, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Leonardo da Vinci, Marcus Aurelius, and Sun Tzu. To ensure security and prevent potential risks from autonomous decisions, the island has established an additional layer of protection in the form of a Human Oversight Assembly, consisting of nine residents who will have the right to block any decision made by the AI Council. Currently, Sensei remains an experimental project without international recognition, with only one permanent resident—gardener Mike—but plans are in place to build up to 30 villas for residents and tourists in the future.
