The publication notes that OpenAI, which popularized modern generative chatbots, is lagging behind in the segment of always-active AI agents for consumers. Such systems can, among other things, book trips, buy groceries, schedule meetings, and help with work presentations.

According to The Verge, Aeon could become OpenAI's response to Meta Muse, SpaceX Grok Bot, OpenClaw, and other products. To compete with them, the new AI agent will need to combine the functionality of the open OpenClaw, the accessibility and ease of setup of Muse, and the convenience of communication offered by Instinct.

The publication names security among the key challenges for AI agents. Risks in this area accompanied the development of agents after the emergence of OpenClaw and, in The Verge's assessment, remained relevant with the release of Muse.
