Pope Leo Establishes Commission on Artificial Intelligence — Politico

Pope Leo XIV has officially announced the creation of a new Vatican body—a special commission on artificial intelligence

This was reported by Politico.

The main goal of this body will be to coordinate the Catholic Church’s activities in the field of AI and to promote ethical approaches to technological development

On Saturday, the Vatican released a statement announcing that the pontiff had decided to form the commission in response to the rapid spread of new technologies.

The main factors cited were “its potential impact on people and humanity as a whole (and) the Church’s concern for the dignity of every person.”

The new commission was established the day after the Pope signed his first encyclical—a pastoral letter containing guidelines for bishops on moral issues.

This document is expected to be officially released in the coming weeks.

This is not the first time the head of the Vatican has drawn the world’s attention to the rapid development of digital technologies.

Just a few days after his election in May 2025, he told the cardinals that the Catholic Church must offer the world “the treasure of its social teaching” to address the challenges posed by AI regarding “human dignity, justice, and work.”

The new encyclical will examine these challenges in detail within the framework of the Church’s traditional social teaching.

Pope Leo XIV is traveling to France for the first time in nearly two decades
