South Korea says it cannot slow AI development
South Korean Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said the country cannot afford to slow the development of artificial intelligence, as it seeks to catch up with global leaders and create new markets. He wrote about this on social media, Anadolu Agency reports, citing Yonhap News.
Competition for advanced models
According to the minister, adjusting the pace of development is a different situation for a country that already has a technological advantage than for a state that is catching up with leaders while also having to create new markets. Bae Kyung-hoon stressed that South Korea cannot reduce the pace of AI development.
He also warned that the gap between countries that have advanced artificial intelligence models close to the human level and states without such models could extend beyond the technological sphere. In his view, this could affect industrial competitiveness, national security and long-term economic growth.

Safety and public trust
At the same time, the minister cautioned against unconditional acceleration of development. According to him, AI safety and public trust must develop in parallel with the technology.
The statement came amid a broader global discussion about the pace of advanced AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, as well as Elon Musk, called for slowing the development of advanced systems so that safety measures could keep up with technological progress, and proposed strengthening independent oversight.
US President Donald Trump rejected such calls, calling concerns about an AI threat to humanity a “hoax,” and said that slowing technological development in the United States could benefit China. China, for its part, said that fearmongering, confrontation and fierce competition could harm global AI governance and called for open and inclusive development of the technology.
