Samsung Display develops a 2K OLED panel with a 165 Hz refresh rate in South Korea
Samsung Display in South Korea has developed a 6.9-inch OLED panel for smartphones that combines 2K resolution and a 165 Hz refresh rate. The company says it is the world’s first mobile display with these specifications. As Korea Herald reports, the panel is intended for smartphones aimed at demanding mobile gaming.
Resolution and refresh rate
At a frequency of 165 Hz, the screen refreshes the image approximately once every six milliseconds. As resolution and refresh rate increase, so does the number of pixels that must be processed in a short period of time. This makes it more difficult to simultaneously ensure fast pixel charging, stable display operation, and energy efficiency.
Samsung Display said it increased the thickness of pixel signal lines by 10% through precise engineering at the 0.1-nanometer level. According to the company, the larger cross-sectional area of the lines reduces electrical resistance and enables pixels to charge faster.

Debut in iQOO 16
The display driver integrated circuit uses a 22-nanometer process instead of the previous 28-nanometer process. According to Samsung Display, this reduces power consumption during the chip’s data-processing operations by approximately 30%.
The panel also includes Samsung’s new organic materials and LEAD polarizer-free OLED technology. The company applied artificial intelligence-based image optimization technology to improve brightness and color uniformity. Peak brightness in high-brightness mode is 2,800 nits, and when 1% of pixels are active, it can reach 10,000 nits.
Samsung Display said the commercial debut of the new panel is scheduled for this month in the iQOO 16 model, a high-performance gaming smartphone from the Vivo-owned iQOO brand.
