AI reshapes China’s micro-drama industry

Chinese producers of short drama series are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence, reducing reliance on traditional studios and leading to job cuts across the industry.

The development was reported by Yicai Global.

Production costs fall dramatically

According to a producer cited in the report, creating an 80-episode series previously cost more than 400,000 yuan (about $58,000).

With AI tools, production costs can drop to around 100,000 yuan, as many tasks—from scene generation to character creation—can now be handled by a computer.

Pressure on traditional studio hubs

The shift has hit cities such as Xi’an (Shaanxi Province) and Zhengzhou (Henan Province) particularly hard. These locations were once known as the “capitals of short dramas.”

Lower production costs reduce the need for actors, filming locations, props, and large production crews.

What micro-dramas are

Micro-dramas are short television-style series with episodes lasting just a few minutes, designed primarily for mobile viewing.

The format has become extremely popular in China thanks to smartphone platforms and fast-paced content consumption.

AI becomes a catalyst for change

Experts say artificial intelligence is evolving from a simple production tool into a major driver of structural change in the media industry.

The trend could significantly reshape video content production, particularly in the fast-growing short-series segment.
