Estonia has authorized the use of self-driving Teslas — ERR

Estonia has officially authorized Tesla electric vehicles equipped with autonomous driving systems to operate on public roads.

This was reported by the Estonian national broadcaster ERR.

The Baltic country has become the third nation in the European Union to take this step, following the Netherlands and Lithuania.

According to the country’s Transport Agency, no additional legislation was required to implement this innovation.

Estonian officials approved the decision by recognizing the type certificate, which was first issued to the American automaker by the Netherlands.

Over the next few months, drivers of new Tesla electric vehicles in Estonia will be able to install an official software update for Autopilot.

However, the availability of this new feature does not relieve the driver of the responsibility to monitor the road, as a driver must always be behind the wheel and bear full responsibility for the vehicle.

The management of the Estonian Vehicle Maintenance Department provided a detailed explanation of the legal and technical nuances of the new system.

Experts noted that the automation merely assists the driver and does not fully replace them while driving.

“This is still a driver assistance system, under which the driver is responsible for the vehicle’s entire behavior on the road and its safety, and must take control when necessary,” explained Jürgo Vahtra.

The software in smart cars is equipped with special algorithms that prevent the driver from losing concentration while driving.

Artificial intelligence closely monitors the driver’s actions and instantly reacts to any signs of inattention.
