Sony to add QSSR AI upscaling to standard PS5 — The Verge

Sony is launching Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, an AI image upscaling technology for the standard PlayStation 5 console. The first games to support the new option will be Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, The Verge reports. Both games are receiving updates that add QSSR as an additional graphics option for PS5.

Technology for the base PS5

QSSR is the result of Sony’s work on Project Amethyst together with AMD. The company calls it a new level of AI upscaling performance for the standard PS5. At the same time, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, which is available on PS5 Pro, remains, in Sony’s assessment, the company’s benchmark solution for this type of graphics processing.

According to Digital Foundry’s preliminary findings, QSSR may operate more slowly than PSSR because the standard PS5 does not have dedicated machine-learning silicon. The outlet notes that base PS5 users should expect image upscaling closer to 1440p resolution, while developers on PS5 Pro usually target an upscaled 4K image.

Adaptation for developers

Daniel Craig, Sony’s chief engineer for graphics research and development, explained to Digital Foundry that on PS5 Pro, developers almost always output an image in 4K by changing the internal rendering resolution. On the standard PS5, teams have to more flexibly adjust not only the rendering resolution but also intermediate and final output parameters depending on the graphics mode.

According to Craig, for games that already support PSSR, QSSR can become a de facto replacement for this technology after several days of tuning. Sony plans to make QSSR widely available to all PlayStation game developers.
