A battle tank with an unmanned turret and integrated drone systems was unveiled in the EU

The Franco-German defense alliance KNDS unveiled its new CAPINT battle tank, which features an unmanned turret, integrated drone systems, and the ability to control robotic systems on the battlefield

The new model was showcased at the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition.

The vehicle was developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter. It is based on the proven Leopard 2A8 platform, which has been enhanced with modern technological solutions.

CAPINT is viewed as an interim generation of armored vehicles until 2040, allowing the military to gain new capabilities without having to wait for the completion of long-term programs to develop the tanks of the future.

Thanks to the use of existing logistical infrastructure, the introduction of the new vehicle is expected to proceed more quickly and with fewer risks.

The tank’s main feature is its fully unmanned turret. The crew will be housed inside a specially protected compartment, rather than beneath the gun, as in traditional tanks.

This design significantly increases the safety of the crew in the event the vehicle is hit.

In addition, the turret has become lighter and more compact, which positively affects the vehicle’s mobility.

The CAPINT is equipped with a 120-mm ASCALON gun with an automatic loading system that meets NATO standards.

The developers emphasize that the design allows for an increase in the caliber of the weapon in the future without having to completely replace the turret, which simplifies the modernization of the tank to meet new challenges on the battlefield.

Another key feature is the integration of unmanned systems. CAPINT can function as a mobile command center, coordinating the operations of robotic platforms and drones.

The system’s capabilities include:

  • reconnaissance drones for locating enemy positions;
  • automatic UAV detection and interception systems;
  • interceptor drones launched directly from launchers mounted on the tank’s hull.

To counter aerial threats, the vehicle employs a comprehensive approach that combines means of physically destroying targets with electronic warfare (EW) systems.

The developers believe that this concept will allow for more effective countermeasures against the mass deployment of drones, which have become one of the key factors in modern military conflicts.

Earlier, the German company Quantum Systems unveiled its new multifunctional aviation platform, the Pulse P19, at the ILA air show in Berlin. Externally, the design resembles World War II-era fighter jets, but its key feature is the capability for autonomous, unmanned operation, which makes the system significantly more technologically advanced than it might seem at first glance.
