Scientists have teleported a photon 270 meters, taking a step toward a quantum internet

An international team of scientists has, for the first time, successfully teleported a photon's quantum state between two separate quantum systems 270 meters apart.

This was reported by ScienceDaily.

The experiment was conducted via an open-air optical channel between two buildings. To do this, the team used GPS synchronization, ultra-sensitive single-photon detectors, and signal stabilization technologies that compensate for atmospheric effects.

The researchers succeeded in transmitting the quantum state—specifically, polarization—from one photon to another that was physically distant. The transmission accuracy was 82 ± 1%, exceeding classical limits.

Scientists from several European universities, including those in Germany, Italy, and Austria, participated in the study.

The researchers note that this achievement confirms the possibility of transmitting quantum information between independent devices and is an important step toward creating scalable quantum networks and a fully-fledged quantum internet.
