Kyivstar has begun shutting down its 3G network
Mobile operator Kyivstar has announced a new phase of network modernization, which involves the gradual phase-out of 3G technology in several regions of Ukraine.
The company is transitioning subscribers to the more modern 4G/LTE standard to improve mobile internet quality, data transfer speeds, and connection stability.
The technological changes will begin to be implemented on May 26 after midnight as part of a scheduled infrastructure update.
Kyivstar explains that the network modernization is intended to improve mobile internet quality, data transfer speeds, and connection stability. At the same time, outdated 3G technology will be gradually phased out in certain areas.
Starting May 29, the 4G rollout will cover a number of regions in Ukraine. Specifically, the changes will affect parts of settlements in Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Mykolaiv, and Kharkiv regions.
The infrastructure upgrade will affect residents of the cities of Varash, Volodymyrets, Mykolaiv, Ochakiv, Kobleve, Kharkiv, Pisochyn, Lyubotyn, and Derhachi.
The company emphasized that the transition will take place gradually, not all at once. Because of this, the infrastructure upgrade may take some time. Most modern smartphones already automatically support 4G/LTE.
However, owners of older phone models may need to manually configure the network. To do this, select 4G or LTE mode in the device settings.
On Apple smartphones, the network is usually configured automatically after mobile data is turned on.
The operator also highlighted SIM cards, which provide access to communication services. If a SIM card does not support 4G, it can be replaced free of charge at service centers while retaining the phone number.
Other Ukrainian operators, including Vodafone Ukraine and Lifecell, have previously announced a similar transition to modern mobile communication standards.
Network upgrades are part of a long-term strategy for the development of telecommunications infrastructure in Ukraine. Looking ahead, mobile operators are also preparing to launch 5G technology, which is already being tested.
This will significantly increase data transfer speeds for all categories of users.
