Barret Zoph, co-founder of artificial intelligence startup Thinking Machines Lab, will join Google DeepMind, a Google division within Alphabet. He will take up the position of vice president of research, Zoph said, Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Reuters.

Zoph's career

Before his appointment at Google DeepMind, Zoph was vice president of research at OpenAI. According to his LinkedIn profile, after leaving Thinking Machines Lab earlier this year, he briefly returned to OpenAI.

Zoph had also previously worked at Google: for six years, he was a research scientist at Google Brain. In 2023, Google Brain merged with DeepMind to form Google DeepMind.

Reshuffle in the AI division

Zoph's move comes amid a series of AI-related personnel reshuffles at the company. In particular, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis stepped aside this month, Reuters notes.

Earlier, Reuters, citing two sources, reported that during an Alphabet all-hands meeting on August 6, it became known that some teams would be transferred from DeepMind to Google corporate.
