A 17-year-old Ukrainian girl set a record by reciting 400 digits of pi
17-year-old Kateryna Zlobina from the Luhansk region set a new Ukrainian record by reciting 400 decimal places of pi from memory; it took her 9 minutes and 27 seconds to do so. Her achievement was officially recognized as a new national record.
She was able to reproduce the long sequence of digits without any errors, demonstrating exceptional memory and concentration.
Kateryna’s category is “The largest number of digits of pi reproduced from memory in writing.”
“Imagine this chaotic ocean of digits, with no logical repetitions or patterns. To hold such a volume of numerical information in your head requires not just an exceptional memory, but phenomenal focus.
Interestingly, Katya recites these digits in her head in two languages at once—Ukrainian and English. So her status as a Ukrainian record-holder is a logical confirmation of this young Ukrainian woman’s abilities,” noted Vetrova.
Kateryna is from Sieverskodonetsk. Since childhood, she has been passionate about three things: creativity, sports, and math.
When the full-scale war began, she was in 8th grade. Her family had to flee to Germany, but Kateryna continued her studies online at her school, Siverskodonetsk School No. 14.
According to Vetrova, the teenager wanted to stay connected to her hometown—which by then had already been occupied—for as long as possible.
Soon after, the family returned to Ukraine. In 10th grade, Kateryna wrote a research paper for the Small Academy of Sciences in the field of mathematics and took third place at the city level. She graduated from a school in the capital with honors.
Kateryna’s mother is a math teacher. That’s why Kateryna says that math is always around her—even at home.
She is currently studying at the State University of Trade and Economics.
