22,000 high-rise buildings in Ukraine have electric heating: communities are preparing generators

In Ukraine, approximately 22,000 high-rise buildings have electric heating systems. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal called on local communities to prepare generators in advance and ensure the operation of “Resilience Centers” near such buildings.

“As for buildings with electric heating—there are 22,000 such high-rise buildings in the country. That’s a huge number of residents. As part of the resilience plan, we have urged communities and community leaders to prepare for next winter and to begin preparing the necessary generators,” the energy minister stated.

At the same time, he noted that large quantities of energy equipment are being imported into Ukraine from the Energy Support Fund.

“We are importing generators in large quantities—tens of thousands of metric tons of energy equipment from the Energy Support Fund. In particular, generators—including high-capacity ones—ranging from 0.3 to 1.5 and even up to 2 megawatts. In principle, this equipment will be sufficient to maintain heating. Near such buildings, the State Emergency Service or local authorities must establish and are required to establish resilience centers, and in the event that the power goes out in these buildings—people will definitely be able to: first, use these centers, second, local authorities must ensure adequate power generation capacity. In particular, when we’re talking about critical infrastructure facilities, such buildings must be included in this category of self-generation,” emphasized Denys Shmyhal.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal made this statement during question time in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
