A 28-year-old soldier drowned at the Yasny Quarry
A 28-year-old soldier died while swimming in the Yasnysky Quarry in the Lviv region. Rescuers received a report of the tragedy overnight, and divers began searching for the body in the morning. Swimming in the reservoir is prohibited due to the dangerous bottom and great depth.
The tragedy occurred on the night of Monday, August 17. Around 1:00 a.m., the Central Rescue and Diving Service of Lviv Oblast received a report of a person who had drowned while swimming in the Yasny Quarry.
According to rescuers, the victim was 28-year-old soldier Nazar K. On the morning of August 17, divers began a search-and-rescue operation. Specialists are searching the body of water to locate the man’s body.
Why It’s Dangerous to Swim There
The Yasnyska Quarry is located in the village of Yasnyska near Lviv. Sand was previously mined here, and after operations ceased, the quarry filled with water. The body of water is not officially designated for swimming. The reason is the dangerous bottom topography, sharp changes in depth, and challenging underwater conditions. In some places, the quarry reaches a depth of about 20 meters. Because of this, even casual swimming can be life-threatening.
Despite the ban, the body of water remains a popular recreational spot. People continue to come there to swim, even though conditions in the quarry can change even a short distance from the shore.
Rescue workers are once again urging people not to enter the water in areas where swimming is prohibited, especially in former quarries. Dangerous depths, steep drops in the bottom, and the lack of designated recreational areas significantly increase the risk of tragedy. This was reported by the Central Rescue and Diving Service of Lviv Oblast.
Law enforcement officials have uncovered a scheme involving the illegal extraction of minerals at a deposit near Uzhhorod. According to the investigation, the state suffered losses of over 949.8 million hryvnias, and four participants in the scheme—including a deputy of the Zakarpattia Regional Council—have already been notified of their status as suspects.
