April 30 marks Ukrainian Border Guard Day: the history of the holiday and greetings
April 30, 2026, marks Border Guard Day in Ukraine. This is a professional holiday for the servicemen and women of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. It was the border guards who were the first to encounter Russian troops on the morning of February 24, 2022, and who continue to protect the country’s borders.
On this day, it is traditional to honor the heroes who defend the country, as well as to share greetings, cards, and words of gratitude in prose and poetry.
History of the Holiday
Until 2003, Ukraine celebrated Border Guard Day on November 4—the day the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On the Border Troops of Ukraine” in 1991. This law was repealed in 2003 following the adoption of the new law “On the National Border Guard Service of Ukraine.”
Since 2018, Ukraine has celebrated Border Guard Day annually on April 30. The holiday was established by a decree of the President of Ukraine on April 27, 2018, to recognize the contribution of border guards to the struggle for Ukraine’s independence and to honor the courage and heroism of the defenders of Ukraine’s state borders.
