Activists have identified the driver of the SUV who attacked tourists near a lake in the Carpathians
Activists have identified the man who, in late August, got into a confrontation with tourists near the high-altitude Apshynets Lake in Zakarpattia. According to their information, the driver of the SUV was local businessman Yosyp Varga.
The incident occurred on the evening of August 23. The SUV drove into the lake, after which the driver went for a swim in the body of water, despite its protected status. When tourists objected, the man reacted aggressively and began threatening them.
According to witnesses, the man later began destroying tents. One of the vacationers used a can of pepper spray, after which the SUV driver struck him and threw a large rock at his back. Another eyewitness was struck in the face with trekking poles.
The victim sought medical attention, and doctors documented bruises on his back, chest, shoulder, and forearm. He did not file an official report of the assault out of fear of possible retaliation.
Following media coverage, the Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case under Part 4 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—hooliganism. The penalty for this offense ranges from three to seven years of imprisonment.
