The remains of Polish and German soldiers were found during an exhumation in Lviv
Exhumation work is underway at the old Holosko Cemetery in Lviv, during which the graves of soldiers who died in the battles for the city in September 1939 are being examined. Experts have already discovered the remains of Polish and German soldiers.
According to reports, experts have exhumed the remains of 17 soldiers from the Polish Army and seven soldiers from the German Army. Military dog tags were found near the remains of three German soldiers.
Yevhen Boiko, Chief of Staff of the Lviv City Council Executive Committee, reported that archaeologists have already examined part of the first row of graves and have fully excavated the second row.
“We have the first interesting results from the exhumation work at the old Holosko Cemetery. From the first row of graves, the remains of six Polish Army soldiers and seven German soldiers were exhumed; three military dog tags were found near them. In the second row, the remains of another 11 Polish soldiers were exhumed. They have already been sent for DNA analysis,” he said.
According to him, the haphazard arrangement of the bodies may indicate that the deceased were buried by civilians rather than military personnel.
In the area already examined, experts have identified the locations of approximately 65–75 individual burial pits. The examination of the third and final row of graves is still ahead.
The work is being carried out jointly by experts from the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, the “Dolia” Memorial and Search Center, and the “Memory” Society for the Search for War Victims.
