The AMCU has identified more than 70 instances of funeral services operating in hospitals
The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine has recommended that local governments and medical institutions refrain from granting unjustified advantages to specific funeral service providers when leasing hospital premises.
According to the AMCU, a market analysis revealed more than 70 cases in which healthcare facilities’ premises were leased to companies providing funeral services.
The committee notes that the operation of funeral service providers directly on hospital grounds gives them a competitive advantage, as that is where a significant number of potential customers are located, who often order a full range of services from a single provider.
The highest number of such cases was recorded in the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions. Specifically, in Kyiv, nine lease agreements for hospital premises were signed with funeral service providers, five of which were with a single company. In Kharkiv, a single municipal enterprise provides funeral services on the premises of nine medical facilities.
In light of this, the AMCU has recommended that local government authorities and hospital operators comply with the requirements of legislation on the protection of economic competition and refrain from granting unjustified advantages to specific companies when leasing premises.
