Weather fronts on May 20 will bring thunderstorms and hail to Ukraine

UA NEWS 19 May 2026 13:50
Weather fronts on May 20 will bring thunderstorms and hail to Ukraine

In the coming days, most of Ukraine will be affected by powerful atmospheric fronts bringing classic summer weather.

This was reported by meteorologist and weather forecaster Natalka Didenko on her official Facebook page.

Thunderstorms, squalls, and even hail in some areas are expected across the country, while in one region, an anticyclone will keep heavy rainfall at bay.

The expert noted that those hoping for sunny and clear weather will have to wait a bit due to the prolonged shift in air masses.

“Because for now, almost the entire territory of Ukraine is and will remain under the influence of atmospheric fronts,” Didenko explained.

The published weather maps clearly show that an additional convergence line has formed over our country.

According to the expert, this means the development of unstable summer-type weather processes, which will be accompanied by local hazardous phenomena.

Regions will experience short-lived rains, thunderstorms, heavy downpours, and in some places—squalls and hail.

“Only the influence of the western anticyclone will dampen the intensity of such processes in the western regions of Ukraine,” the specialist noted.

Temperatures on May 20 will show noticeable regional contrasts across the country. Throughout the day, the average air temperature in Ukraine will range from +21 to +25 °C.

Much warmer temperatures—from +25 to +28 °C—are expected in the east, center, and south, as well as in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

At the same time, a cooler air mass will prevail in the western regions, in Zhytomyr and Vinnytsia regions, and in the western parts of Cherkasy region. There, temperatures will reach only +18…+22 °C.

Forecasters advise residents of these regions to keep umbrellas handy due to high humidity.

In the Ukrainian capital, Wednesday will bring a significant deterioration in weather conditions and a threat to urban infrastructure. Short-lived rains and thunderstorms are expected in Kyiv, while the air will warm up to a comfortable +25 °C.

“There is a chance of heavy, brief downpours in the capital—be sure to choose a safe place to park your car; city drains are sometimes clogged, and streets can turn into rivers,” the meteorologist warned.

On May 19, cloudy weather with some sunny intervals is expected in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, with brief showers and thunderstorms in some areas.

On Monday, May 19, cloudy weather with some sunny intervals is forecast for Ukraine; rain and hail are possible in some regions.
