Without light, heat and water: why new buildings can become uninhabitable

This winter, Ukrainians may feel the effects of the most difficult heating season yet, as Russian attacks on energy infrastructure leave cities without heat and electricity. It is believed that new buildings with autonomous heating will be able to hold out longer, but experts say the main problem is the lack of heat from the central network. Without this resource, even modern high-rise buildings can be extremely vulnerable.

Even the presence of generators will not solve the problem in the face of blackouts, as most modern buildings have 25 or more floors, and water will not rise above the 12-14th floor without pumps. Along with this, the problem of water supply is also critical: in the absence of water, the sewerage system will stop functioning, which will create unacceptable living conditions. Experts emphasize that the survival time of new buildings without heat depends on the temperature outside and the quality of insulation.

Residents of new buildings should actively prepare for possible problems with water and coolant. Some condominiums are investing in alternative energy sources to increase their autonomy, although the effectiveness of solar panels in winter remains questionable. Experts believe that proper integration with batteries can ensure that the systems work even in difficult conditions. Thus, the situation in new buildings is worrying, and without adequate solutions, they may become uninhabitable.
