Political factors are holding up Ukraine's NATO membership — The Telegraph
Ukraine and NATO have reached the highest level of cooperation in the history of their relationship, but the issue of membership remains stalled due to political factors.
This is reported by The Telegraph.
It is noted that interaction between Kyiv and the Alliance encompasses both political dialogue and practical military cooperation. Contacts have become significantly more intensive and are based on a high level of trust.
At the same time, a number of countries already effectively view Ukraine as a future NATO member and maintain constant coordination.
Political factors, particularly Russia’s influence, are cited as the main obstacle to accession. The article emphasizes that the impossibility of membership in the near future is more of a political construct that can be both reinforced and quickly changed.
The authors also refute common arguments against Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance, particularly the claim regarding alleged promises not to expand NATO eastward and the risk of direct conflict.
It is separately noted that the war against Ukraine is not linked to its aspiration for membership, but is a consequence of Russia’s intentions to destroy Ukrainian statehood.
As a reminder, the NATO mission in Iraq has evacuated all personnel to Europe.
Rutte also called on NATO countries to support the U.S. military operation against Iran.
