Szijjártó has left politics and will be selling Chinese cars

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced that he is resigning from his seat in parliament in connection with his move to work for the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. 

The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, who actively supported the Chinese auto industry during his tenure, submitted an official statement resigning from his seat in parliament. Szijjártó explained this decision by stating that he had received an extremely prestigious offer to take on an international position at one of the world’s leading companies. According to him, he will now serve as the executive in charge of external relations and the development of new business areas for the BYD Group.

The carmaker’s Hungarian office clarified to the MTI news agency that the former lawmaker had been appointed to a global international position and would not be part of the direct management of the company’s Hungarian branch. Péter Szijjártó served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in three of Viktor Orbán’s governments and was one of the most prominent architects of the Hungarian prime minister’s pro-Russian policy.

He announced this on his Facebook page.

Former Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó retained his parliamentary seat in the new session of the Hungarian National Assembly. This allowed him to continue his political activities as a member of the Hungarian parliament.
