The State Bureau of Investigation denies that it closed the case involving a developer linked to the brother of the SBI director

The State Bureau of Investigations has not made a decision to close the criminal case against a developer whom the media have linked to Oleksandr, the brother of SBI Director Oleksiy Sukhachov

This was reported by Tetyana Sapian, communications advisor to the SBI director, while commenting on a recently published journalistic investigation revealing that the official’s brother owns 143 apartments. According to her, family ties of any individuals do not constitute grounds for concluding that they influence the course of a pretrial investigation or the adoption of procedural decisions.

Determining jurisdiction over this criminal proceeding falls within the prosecutor’s authority in accordance with the requirements of the Criminal Procedure Code. By a resolution of the Deputy Prosecutor General dated August 16, 2025, the investigation in the aforementioned case was entrusted to units of the National Police. Any procedural decisions are made by authorized investigators and prosecutors exclusively within the bounds of the law. Separately, Sapyan explained that the agency does not comment on information concerning the private business activities of individuals who are not employees of the bureau.

Earlier on Friday, journalists published an investigation titled “143 Apartments Belonging to the Brother of the SBI Director,” in which they examined the circumstances surrounding the acquisition of the property and the status of the criminal proceedings—in which first the police, and later the DBR, investigated the legality of the developer’s activities. The article states that in July 2018, Oleksandr Sukhachov purchased 30 apartments in one of Kharkiv’s residential complexes at prices ranging from 24,000 to 49,000 UAH per apartment (ranging from $932 to $1,856 at the exchange rate at the time), which was significantly below market prices. As of now, he no longer owns nearly all of these properties.

As a reminder, journalists from the “Slidstvo.Info” and Anti-Corruption Center projects conducted an investigation into the real estate holdings of well-known Kharkiv businessman Oleksandr Sukhachov. The latter is also the brother of Oleksiy Sukhachov, director of the State Bureau of Investigations (SBI). The investigation report details 143 (!) apartments and office spaces that he owns or has owned, and describes the circumstances under which they were acquired.

People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak called for the immediate dismissal of State Bureau of Investigations Director Oleksiy Sukhachov following the publication of a journalistic investigation into the apartments owned by his brother.
