EU diplomats remain in Kyiv despite threats from Russia

EU diplomats remain in Kyiv despite threats from Russia

Despite Russia's threats of new large-scale airstrikes, European Union diplomats will continue their work in Kyiv, Katarina Mathernova said.

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova wrote about this on Facebook.

“The very same regime that launches missile and drone strikes against the civilian population every night is now warning others to stay away. We understand perfectly well what this means. Russia wants to intimidate. To provoke panic. To isolate Ukraine. This will not succeed. The EU is not going anywhere. We are staying in Kyiv. We are standing with Ukraine,” Mathernova assured.

She emphasized that “threats against diplomats and international organizations are not a sign of strength, but a manifestation of desperation.”

“The more aggressive and threatening the Kremlin becomes, the more obvious it is that Putin’s regime understands: it will not be able to break Ukraine’s resistance, nor the support of its partners. Kyiv stands firm. Ukraine stands firm. And we stand alongside them,” the diplomat noted.

Maternova added that “today’s statement by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a masterpiece of hypocrisy.”

“A regime that has been shelling residential buildings, museums, maternity wards, schools, and power plants for years has suddenly started talking about ‘international humanitarian law’ and the ‘Geneva Conventions,’” she noted.

The EU stated that Russia is losing its ability to dictate terms.
