The Dniester River broke its 131-year-old record for the lowest water level
A hydrological drought continues on the Dniester, and the water level has dropped to a historic low. On August 28, in Zalishchyky, Ternopil Oblast, the lowest water flow was recorded in the entire history of observations, which have been conducted since 1895.
The active phase of the hydrological drought is continuing on the Dniester. Due to the prolonged water shortage, the river is already breaking records that had stood for decades. According to meteorologists, on August 27, the inflow of water into the Dniester Reservoir was only 30 cubic meters per second. This is approximately 12% of the normal rate.
The next day, the situation became even more critical. “On August 28, at the Zalishchyky hydrological station (Ternopil Oblast), the water level was lower than the historical minimum marks for the entire observation period since 1895, and the water discharge reached a historic daily low for many years—24 m³/s (12%),” the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center reported.
Thus, Zalishchyky recorded the lowest water level in 131 years of observations. Hydrologists describe the current situation as an active phase of hydrological drought. This means that the amount of water in the river and reservoir has become significantly lower than usual for this time of year.
The rate of 24 cubic meters of water per second is a historic low for this observation point. It represents only 12% of the long-term average. Experts continue to monitor water levels and the hydrological situation on the Dniester. Further changes will depend, in particular, on precipitation and weather conditions in the coming days.
