Two men were each sentenced to 5 years for attempting to smuggle ancient coins
Two residents of the Mykolaiv region were convicted of attempting to illegally export ancient coins of cultural and historical value abroad.
The men, aged 60 and 62, found a buyer through an online platform and agreed to sell the archaeological finds in Moldova. To conceal the coins from customs inspection, they hid them inside the casing of an electronic measuring device.
In late May 2026, the package was handed over to the drivers of an international bus route from Mykolaiv to Moldova. The drivers were unaware of its contents.
During a customs inspection, the coins were discovered and seized. These are ancient coins that were in circulation in the Northern Black Sea region during the time of the Olbia Chora.
The court sentenced each of the men to five years in prison and banned them from engaging in activities related to the circulation of cultural property for two years. At the same time, they were granted a one-year probationary period, suspending the execution of their main sentence.
