Two scientists are suspected of extorting nearly 1 million hryvnias in the Cherkasy region

Two researchers from state-run research institutions have been notified that they are suspected of extorting approximately 980,000 hryvnias in illicit benefits from a business representative. 

According to the investigation, the money was demanded in exchange for influencing the approval of environmental impact assessment documentation. The documents pertained to a project to install a wind turbine in the Cherkasy region.

In January 2026, the suspects—who held the positions of senior and junior research associates—demanded 550,000 hryvnias for preparing and revising certain sections of the relevant report.

Subsequently, they demanded an additional 430,000 UAH. Of this amount, 350,000 UAH was for influencing officials whose decisions determined the approval of the documentation, and another 80,000 UAH was for supporting and lobbying on behalf of the project.

On August 11, 2026, after the transfer of 430,000 UAH, one of the suspects was detained pursuant to Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Both have been notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—receiving an unlawful benefit for influencing the decision-making of a person authorized to perform state functions, combined with extortion of such a benefit.

This was reported by prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor General.

A female officer of the General Staff was detained for accepting a bribe of 14,000 dollars.
