Former lawmaker Suprunenko to Stand Trial for Illegal Land Seizure Near the Dnipro River
Prosecutors from the Solomyanskyi District Prosecutor’s Office in Kyiv have filed an indictment against Oleksandr Suprunenko, a former member of the Ukrainian Parliament (VI and VIII convocations) and a member of the Kyiv City Council. He is accused of unlawfully occupying land plots and engaging in illegal construction within the Dnipro River’s coastal protection zone.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Oleksandr Suprunenko’s actions are classified under Parts 2 and 4 of Article 197-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The investigation established that between 2008 and 2017, Oleksandr Suprunenko, acting in collusion with his father, unlawfully occupied adjacent land plots totaling more than 0.3 hectares in the Dnipro District of Kyiv without the necessary decisions from state authorities.
According to law enforcement officials, a fence was erected around the plots, restricting public access to the territory and the banks of the Dnipro River.
The investigation also alleges that in 2012, a 103-square-meter house was built on one of the unlawfully occupied plots.
The prosecutor’s office emphasizes that the land plots are located within the 100-meter riparian protection zone of a major river, where the law prohibits any construction or the erection of fences.
Currently, the indictment against Oleksandr Suprunenko has been submitted to the court, and the case materials concerning his father have been separated into a separate criminal proceeding.
Oleksandr Suprunenko was born in Kyiv in 1971. He worked as a driver, a gas station attendant, a legal and marketing consultant, and also managed several businesses.
In 2006, he became a member of the Kyiv City Council representing Leonid Chernovetskyi’s Bloc.
He was first elected to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in 2007 on the Party of Regions’ list, and a second time as an independent candidate.
In 2012, he supported the law “On the Principles of State Language Policy,” which expanded the use of the Russian language.
In the 2019 parliamentary elections, Suprunenko ran in a single-member district but failed to win a seat in the Verkhovna Rada.
According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the law and by a court conviction.
