A defendant in the case involving former MP Gunko was sentenced for stealing 30 million hryvnias worth of crops
The High Anti-Corruption Court approved a plea agreement with Oleksandr Kasyan, the former acting director of the “Mayak” Research Station at the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences (NAAS). The court sentenced him to seven years of probation.
Kasyan is one of the defendants in the criminal case involving former People’s Deputy Anatoliy Gunko. According to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), the participants in the scheme illegally appropriated crops from state-owned enterprises worth approximately 30 million hryvnias.
The investigation established that in 2021, the organizers of the scheme facilitated the illegal harvesting and removal of 990 metric tons of sunflower seeds and 1,400 metric tons of corn with a total value of 27.3 million hryvnias. The harvest was transported to private grain storage facilities under their control in the Chernihiv and Poltava regions.
In 2022, according to the investigation, the scheme’s participants continued their activities, shipping an additional 203 metric tons of sunflower seeds from the territory of the state research station, while the actual harvest volumes were not reflected in official reports.
