Ukraine and Sweden Have Agreed on Next Steps Regarding the Gripen

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov held talks with his Swedish counterpart, Paul Jonsson, during which the two sides discussed the next steps in the project to supply Gripen fighter jets.

During the meeting, attention was focused on the practical steps necessary for the transfer of these modern fighter jets to Ukraine. The Gripen fighter jets are expected to significantly enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and strengthen the protection of the country’s airspace.

Fedorov thanked Sweden for its historic decision to supply modern Gripen fighter jets and discussed with the minister the next steps in implementing this initiative, particularly the training of Ukrainian pilots.

“One of the key advantages of the Gripen is its ability to deploy Meteor missiles. This is one of the aircraft’s key strengths for defending Ukrainian airspace,” Fedorov noted.

A separate focus of the meeting was on air defense. Sweden has already allocated approximately $500 million to the PURL mechanism, which enables the rapid provision of critically needed weapons to Ukraine.

“We are working on further deliveries of missiles for air defense systems and the development of our anti-ballistic project—this is one of the key priorities for protecting Ukrainian cities,” Fedorov noted.

Special attention was given to developing middle- and deep-strike capabilities and fostering cooperation between the defense industries. In particular, they discussed the launch of Brave Sweden, modeled after the Ukrainian Brave1 cluster, and preparations for the Drone Deal.

Fedorov shared this information on social media on Wednesday.
