Church Holiday on June 24: The Orthodox Church celebrates the Nativity of John the Baptist

On June 24, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. It is one of the few church holidays dedicated specifically to the birth of a saint, rather than the day of his repose.

John the Baptist played a special role in Christian history. It was he who baptized Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and became the prophet who announced the coming of the Savior to the people.

The Nativity of John the Baptist is one of the most revered feasts of the church year. The Orthodox tradition specifically highlights only three birthdays: those of Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and John the Baptist. This attention to the saint is no coincidence. He is considered the last prophet of the Old Testament and the man who prepared the people for the coming of the Messiah.

Ihor Lutsan, secretary-advisor of the Chernivtsi-Bukovina Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, explains that the feast is based on Gospel events and commemorates the prophet’s life. “At the heart of this church feast lies a historical Gospel event and the glorification of God’s great prophet. The focus is on the person of St. John, his feat of ascetic life, and his preaching of repentance and witness to Christ,” the clergyman noted.

The date of the celebration also has symbolic significance. It falls during the period after the summer solstice, when the days gradually begin to grow shorter. This echoes John’s own words about Christ: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Why the holiday is often associated with Ivan Kupala

For many Ukrainians, June 24 is associated not only with a church holiday but also with Ivan Kupala. However, priests emphasize that these are different traditions with different origins.

Kupala rituals existed even before the adoption of Christianity. Our ancestors believed in the special power of the sun, water, fire, and nature. After the Christianization of Rus’, some of these customs were preserved in folk culture and, over time, came to coincide with the feast day of John the Baptist. “People once worshipped the forces of nature and believed in the special power of the sun, fire, water, and fertility. After the Christianization of Rus’, some of these customs were preserved in folk traditions, as they did not disappear overnight,” explained Ihor Lutsan.

That is precisely why such Kupala customs as jumping over bonfires, weaving wreaths, searching for the mythical fern flower, and various forms of fortune-telling remain popular among the people to this day. At the same time, the Church emphasizes that these rituals have no connection to Christian doctrine. Similarly, Church tradition does not link the holiday to beliefs about mermaids or a prohibition against swimming in bodies of water.

Prayer to Saint John the Baptist

On the feast day, believers turn to John the Forerunner in prayer and ask for his intercession before God. “Saint John the Forerunner, great prophet and baptizer of the Lord! Pray to God for us, help us to grow stronger in faith, to live according to God’s commandments, and not to stray from the path of truth. May the Lord grant peace, health, and blessings to our families. Amen.”

Folk Omens for June 24

Our ancestors closely observed nature on this day and believed that it could reveal what the summer would be like. Among the most common signs are:

  • abundant morning dew—a sign of a good harvest;
  • a clear dawn—a bountiful summer;
  • rain on this day — signals wet weather in the coming weeks;
  • medicinal herbs gathered on the eve of the holiday were considered especially healing.

What People Were Advised Not to Do on This Day

People believed that on June 24, one should not quarrel, offend others, or wish ill upon anyone. They also tried to postpone heavy physical labor, cleaning, laundry, and sewing.

At the same time, most of these prohibitions stem from folk traditions rather than church rules. For the Church, the main focus on this day remains prayer, good deeds, and the commemoration of Saint John the Baptist, who through his life set an example of faith, humility, and service to God.
