Bonya, a raccoon-like dog, was evacuated from Druzhkivka

Volunteers evacuated a raccoon-like dog named Bonya from Druzhkivka, a town near the front lines in Donetsk Oblast. His owner asked them to take the animal to a safer place, as she herself is currently unable to leave the dangerous area.

Bonia has an unusual story. After the local zoo closed due to the war, the woman took him in, tamed him, and cared for him as a pet for many years.

An unusual rescue operation took place in Druzhkivka, Donetsk Oblast. Volunteers evacuated Bonya, a raccoon-like dog who had been living with a local resident after the zoo closed due to the war.

At first, the rescuers didn’t even realize exactly what they were about to evacuate. “At first we thought it was a badger, but soon we were told that it was a so-called raccoon dog. We had never heard of this animal before and had no idea they even existed,” the volunteers said. Later, they were told that it was neither a raccoon nor a badger. The raccoon-like dog belongs to the canine family and is a closer relative of foxes, although it closely resembles a raccoon in appearance.

Bonia’s story began shortly after the full-scale war broke out. Due to ongoing hostilities, the local zoo closed, and its animals had to be rescued. That’s when Bonia ended up with a family in Druzhkivka. The woman took the animal in, tamed him, and treated him as a full-fledged member of the family. Despite the danger, she chose to remain in the city near the front lines. But she eventually realized that it would be safer for Bonya to be farther away from the front.

That is why she reached out to volunteers, asking them to evacuate her unusual pet. Bonya is currently in a safe place. The plan is for him to stay there until his owner is able to bring him back home.

Volunteers say this story serves as yet another reminder that war threatens more than just people. “Animals don’t understand war, and they desperately need our help,” the rescuers emphasized.

According to the volunteers, the evacuation of domestic and wild animals from frontline areas takes place almost daily. Many of them are left without owners, food, or a safe place, so every such operation offers a chance to save another life. The rescue was reported by the organization RainCoast Dog Rescue.
