Klymenko explained the complexity of Timur Mindich's extradition from Israel — DW
Ukrainian law enforcement authorities have charged Timur Mindich, after which he was officially placed on the wanted list.
This was stated by SAPO Head Oleksandr Klymenko in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
Detectives from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) have asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to initiate the procedure for the suspect’s extradition to Ukraine.
The head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), Oleksandr Klymenko, confirmed that the relevant request has already been signed by the Prosecutor General and sent to the country where the suspect is currently located.
According to the official, this process requires maximum confidentiality to ensure a successful outcome.
“Extradition requests must be sent confidentially, because the key objective is for this request to reach the individual while they are still in the country to which it is being sent,” Oleksandr Klymenko explained in an interview with journalists.
This is done to ensure that the suspect does not have time to change their place of residence.
The process of preparing the documents proved to be technically complex and time-consuming due to the large volume of materials.
The first draft of the request was sent as early as late February, but it required further refinement and the translation of numerous pieces of evidence into a foreign language.
All identified shortcomings were addressed in a coordinated manner with international experts.
After a final review, the Prosecutor General certified the package of documents, which launched the official process of returning Mindich to Ukraine for investigative proceedings.
An important point is that Ukrainian detectives do not have the right to independently conduct procedural actions on the territory of other states.
Any actions abroad take place exclusively through the mechanism of international legal assistance and in cooperation with local police.
NABU confirmed that Mindich had planned his escape from Ukraine in advance.
