When will Ukrainians be able to see the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower?

UA NEWS 16 April 2026 21:00
When will Ukrainians be able to see the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower?

On the night of Tuesday, April 22, the Lyrid meteor shower will reach its peak, allowing observers to see 15 to 20 meteors per hour. The best time for viewing is in the predawn hours, when the shower’s radiant is at its highest point in the sky.

This is reported by Space.com, noting that sunlight at dawn will gradually make it harder to see the celestial event.

The Lyrids are an annual phenomenon that occurs from April 16 to 25 and is associated with Comet Thatcher, which orbits the Sun every 415.5 years. Although the intensity of the shower is usually moderate, in some years there are bursts of up to 100 meteors per hour; however, it is difficult to predict such activity in advance. Comet Thatcher last approached the Sun in 1861, leaving behind a trail of particles that create spectacular streaks of light as they burn up in the atmosphere.

For the best viewing experience, experts recommend choosing locations with minimal artificial lighting, away from cities. Since the meteor shower originates from the constellation Lyra, observers should focus on that part of the sky. This year’s peak will be the main astronomical event of April for residents of the country and the entire Northern Hemisphere.

On January 3, residents of Ukraine had the opportunity to see the first full moon of 2026, known as the Wolf Moon, as well as the peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower.
