Koretsky commented on Klymenko's possible appointment as defense minister
Serhiy Koretsky commented on the possible appointment of Ihor Klymenko as Ukraine’s defense minister. He stated that he considers Klymenko a strong and professional leader, but noted that the final decision on the candidate to head the defense ministry rests with the president.
In his remarks, Koretskyi stated that his government must be a government of defense. In this context, he responded to a question regarding Klymenko’s likely transfer from the Ministry of Internal Affairs to the Ministry of Defense.
“Regarding the Ministry of Internal Affairs, based on my practical experience over the winter, I have observed the ministry’s work and hold the ministry—and Klymenko personally—in the highest regard. I believe he is a strong, professional, and effective minister. Can the government become a government of defense? It can. Because there is the will, the internal need, and unity. As for the candidate for defense minister—that is the exclusive authority of the president,” Koretskyi said.
When asked whether he could keep Mykhailo Fedorov in his Cabinet, Koretskyi stated that they must first wait for the Verkhovna Rada to vote on his appointment.
Fedorov’s Resignation
Yesterday, it was officially confirmed that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had decided to replace Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. He named Igor Klymenko as the candidate to replace him. Among the reasons for this decision, the president cited Fedorov’s conflict with Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi.
Today, the Verkhovna Rada is already considering the appointment of Koretsky as the new prime minister; next on the agenda is the appointment of the entire new Cabinet as a package. Separately, in accordance with procedure, the ministers of defense and foreign affairs will be appointed. Their nominations must be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada by the president.
