Neurosurgeons in Lviv successfully removed a complex brain tumor from an eight-year-old child
Neurosurgeons at the Center for Pediatric Medicine in Lviv performed an extremely complex, hours-long surgery to remove a craniopharyngioma—one of the most serious tumors in children.
The patient was eight-year-old Yurchik, whose family had moved to Lviv from the Volyn region in search of qualified medical care.
The life-saving surgery prevented critical neurological complications and saved the boy’s life.
The health issue arose suddenly when the child developed strabismus in one eye and constant double vision. The parents immediately consulted an ophthalmologist and later a neurologist to determine the cause of the condition.

On the recommendation of specialists, the boy underwent an MRI, which revealed a dangerous mass in the middle cranial fossa.
The search for an experienced neurosurgeon led the family to Mykhailo Lovga at the Clinic of Pediatric Neurosurgery. At the medical facility, the patient underwent a series of additional tests, and a definitive diagnosis was made: craniopharyngioma.
Doctors note that such tumors usually grow slowly, but their critical location makes them extremely life-threatening.

Yurik’s tumor was growing abnormally fast, which was already significantly affecting his vision and overall physical development.
It was pressing on the pituitary gland, the optic nerves, and vital brain structures, causing hormonal and neurological disruptions.
Due to the rapid deterioration of the child’s condition and the high risk of complete irreversible blindness, the doctors decided to act without delay.
“The tumor was located deep within the brain, near important blood vessels, specifically the branches of the middle cerebral artery. It was impossible to remove some of its cystic components at the same time: they were in different areas,” Mykhailo Lovga explained the details of the procedure.
This was reported by the Center for Pediatric Medicine.
