Mykhailo Fedorov called for elections to be held in Ukraine
Ukraine needs to develop a mechanism for holding elections even during wartime, ensuring the right to vote for all citizens. This view was expressed on August 18 by former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
“Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia. We are at war precisely because we want to remain a free European state. Therefore, we must find a legitimate, secure, and realistic mechanism that will allow Ukraine to restore a fully-fledged democratic process even in the event of a protracted war,” the former minister added.
Fedorov noted that it will be necessary to ensure the right to vote for military personnel, millions of Ukrainians abroad, and people living in frontline regions.
According to him, Ukraine has already achieved what the world considered impossible on many occasions. Therefore, a solution can be found in this situation as well.
“People cannot live indefinitely in a country where they do not know why certain decisions are made, why some reforms move forward while others are blocked, or why decisions needed on the front lines today languish in offices for months,” he said.
Fedorov believes that against this backdrop, people come to think that the main criterion for officials is not their professionalism, but their loyalty to the system. A modern state cannot function this way.
The former minister spoke about this on his YouTube channel.
As a reminder, on August 18, the Verkhovna Rada received proposals from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to appoint Yevhen Khmara as Ukraine’s Minister of Defense and Andriy Sibiga as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Verkhovna Rada prematurely terminated the mandates of People’s Deputies Denys Maslov and Vitaliy Bezgin, who were members of the “Servant of the People” faction. Parliament adopted the relevant resolutions at a plenary session on July 17.
