Mudra announced the possible launch of a special tribunal on Russian aggression as early as next year

Iryna Mudra, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, who oversees issues related to Russia’s international accountability, commented on the decision to establish a Special Tribunal for the Russian Federation’s crime of aggression. According to her, the tribunal could begin its work as early as next year. It is intended to serve as a tool for holding Russia accountable for waging war against Ukraine.

She wrote about this on Facebook.

Mudra stated that this is the first time “since Nuremberg and Tokyo” that a separate mechanism for accountability for waging war has been established.

“For several years, we were told—this will never happen. It’s legally complex. Politically sensitive. Too many interests are opposed,” she emphasized.

According to Mudra, the next step will be the formation of the tribunal itself in The Hague: this involves appointing judges, approving procedures, and launching investigations. She noted that the tribunal is expected to begin its work as early as next year.

Mudra also mentioned the lengthy negotiations and numerous attempts to find a legal mechanism for establishing the tribunal. According to her, the Ukrainian team of lawyers, diplomats, and parliamentarians repeatedly faced resistance but continued to seek a solution.

She added that the tribunal should serve as a tool for holding personally accountable those who made the decision to start the war against Ukraine.

As a reminder, the Council of Europe supportedthe launch of a special tribunal regarding Russia’s aggression.
