Another 150 MW of gas-fired power generation is being installed in the Kyiv region — Regional State Administration
There are already 81 gas-fired power generation units in operation in the Kyiv region, with a total capacity of 103 MW. Another 150 MW are currently under construction.
Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration, made this statement in a comment to Ukrinform on the sidelines of the 2nd International Cohesion Forum, responding to a question about the implementation of the region’s sustainability plan.
"When it comes to decentralizing power generation, we are highly prepared. As for solar energy, we already have 201 stations with a total capacity of 311 MW. This is a significant volume, one of the largest in the country. Until now, we had no opportunity to install wind power generation. We are currently working actively on this and have relevant projects totaling up to 1 GW in our region. We have a large, unprecedented amount of gas-fired power generation. This includes an additional 81 units with a total capacity of 103 MW. We have technical specifications issued for an additional approximately 150 MW. This is currently in the process of being installed. In other words, we are accelerating at a rapid pace, and these projects will be implemented as effectively as possible by September 1," he said.
Commenting on other aspects of the resilience plan, Kalashnik noted that measures to decentralize water supply are currently in the initial stages of implementation. Additionally, he said that following the end of the heating season, the modernization of worn-out heating networks and the creation of alternative heat supply systems have begun.
In addition, the head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration noted that assistance from partners will be needed to get through the next heating season. Specifically, this refers to additional generators.
"There is some equipment we need, including generators. After all, they are prone to wear and tear. We saw the peak loads the generators operated under during the period when we experienced prolonged, multi-hour outages and blackouts. Generators should be serviced after 50 operating hours—replacing equipment and lubricants as needed. Sometimes this can be done on-site, sometimes the units need to be removed and transported to a service station. Therefore, it makes sense to maintain a reserve of at least 50% of the equipment currently in operation at infrastructure facilities—including boiler rooms, water supply, and wastewater systems,” he explained.
Kalashnyk added that the Kyiv region has already received aid from France in the form of solar power plants, including container-type units: 68 containers, each with a capacity of 105 kW, for a total of 7 MW. According to the head of the Regional State Administration, these stations are operating at heat supply facilities. Meanwhile, Israel has provided over 100 portable backup power systems. The head of the Regional State Administration noted that they are being installed in healthcare facilities in the largest cities of the Kyiv region—Brovary and Bila Tserkva.
