Energy rates may rise starting in July

Ukraine may revise Ukrenergo’s tariffs as early as July 1, and they will increase for energy market operators. At the same time, for ordinary people, this increase will not directly affect the price of electricity on their bills. The decision is not yet final, but the figures have already been put up for discussion. This information was made public during an open meeting of the NEURC.

The National Commission for Energy and Utilities Regulation has proposed raising tariffs for NPC “Ukrenergo,” specifically for the key components of the power system—electricity transmission and dispatch—which determine how electricity flows across the country and how the entire grid is coordinated in real time.

According to the draft, the electricity transmission tariff is planned to increase by more than a fifth—to 903.53 UAH per MWh excluding VAT—while the dispatch tariff is set to rise by nearly 8%—to 118.64 UAH per MWh; while for certain industrial consumers, particularly “green” electrometallurgy, the increase could be even more significant. “The figures cited above are preliminary and have yet to be finalized,” officials noted during an open NEURC meeting, emphasizing that the final decision is still pending and the discussion on tariffs is ongoing.

The regulator also emphasizes that these changes should not affect residential consumers; that is, for the general public, the price per kilowatt-hour on their bills will not change even if the new tariffs are approved, as this concerns internal settlements among energy market participants.

To provide context: previously, Ukrenergo proposed an even more significant increase in tariffs, but the current version appears more moderate, although it still entails additional costs for businesses and energy companies.

Final decisions have not yet been made, but the market is already reacting to potential changes, as Ukrenergo’s tariffs directly impact the power grid’s balance, the costs for large consumers, and the overall economy of the sector.

On Wednesday, May 27, Ukraine does not plan to impose power supply restrictions, and the power grid is operating without scheduled outages, although energy officials are still asking people not to overload the grid during peak hours.
