In the Lviv region, a 7-year-old girl was hospitalized with infectious mononucleosis
A 7-year-old girl from the Stryi region was admitted to the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital after being diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as “kissing disease.” At first, doctors suspected strep throat, but laboratory tests confirmed a different diagnosis.
The child was brought to the hospital with a high fever, severe sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.
After receiving treatment, the girl recovered and has already been discharged home.
The disease is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, which is transmitted primarily through saliva.
“The disease got its name because the Epstein-Barr virus is transmitted primarily through saliva. That is why kissing is one of the ways of transmission. However, it’s not just teenagers or adults who can become infected. Children also get infected quite often: through close daily contact, such as sharing cups, bottles, utensils, or toys that have recently been contaminated with an infected person’s saliva,” the Center explained.
According to medical officials, 293 cases of infectious mononucleosis were reported in the Lviv region in 2025, of which 236 were among children under the age of 18. Across Ukraine, a total of 2,095 cases of the disease were recorded during this period.
Meanwhile, in the first half of 2026, 136 cases have already been detected in the Lviv region, 107 of which were among children.
Experts emphasize that to prevent the disease, it is important to follow personal hygiene rules, avoid sharing dishes and bottles, and avoid close contact with people who have symptoms of the infection.

As a reminder, in Lviv during June and the first two weeks of July, 70 children were admitted to hospitals after sustaining injuries while riding electric scooters. Of these, 21 children were hospitalized due to severe injuries.
