In the Lviv region, a young man contracted leptospirosis while swimming in a pond

A 16-year-old resident of the Lviv region was admitted to the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital after being laboratory-confirmed to have leptospirosis following a swim in a body of standing water in late June. This is already the sixth case of this disease in the region this year, according to the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In early July, the teenager began experiencing the first symptoms: dizziness, jaundice, pain in the calf muscles, decreased urine output, and a fever of up to 39°C. The patient’s condition is currently assessed as moderate, and the Laboratory for Highly Dangerous Infections has definitively confirmed the diagnosis.

Leptospirosis is a dangerous infectious disease that affects the kidneys, liver, and nervous system. The pathogen enters the body through micro-injuries to the skin or mucous membranes while swimming, fishing, or coming into contact with water or soil contaminated with animal secretions; however, humans do not transmit the infection to others.

This was reported on July 14 by the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Following a mass food poisoning incident at Mykhailo Katsurin’s “Chinese Hello” restaurant in Lviv, medical professionals diagnosed 45 people with salmonellosis. All of them had eaten the same dessert.
