A joint center run by Ukraine and Poland has begun operations on Mount Pip Ivan
An International Center for the Shared Use of Scientific Equipment has been opened on Mount Pip Ivan in the Carpathians. It will operate out of the restored high-altitude observatory, and researchers not only from Ukraine and Poland but also from other countries will be able to use its equipment.
The new center was inaugurated by Andriy Butenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science, and Marcin Kulaszk, Poland’s Minister of Science and Higher Education. During the ceremony, they also signed a declaration of cooperation between Ukraine and Poland.
The center was established at the renovated observatory on Mount Pip Ivan. Ukrainian and Polish scientists will work here together, but access to the equipment will also be open to other research teams.
What Will Be Studied on Pip Ivan
One of the main areas of focus will be astronomy. A telescope has already been installed at the summit and housed under a special dome. The structure is designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions typical of high-altitude regions. In the future, there are plans to supplement the telescope with a robotic system. This will allow the equipment to be controlled remotely and observations to be conducted without the constant presence of researchers at the summit.
According to Andriy Butenko, the observatory on Pip Ivan is one of only four high-altitude observatories of this caliber. But the center’s work will not be limited to astronomy. Scientists will also be able to study the climate, weather, and natural processes in the high mountains.
The Chornogora mountain range has unique flora and distinct ecosystems. This provides an opportunity to observe how nature changes in mountainous conditions. Meteorological laboratories are also in operation on the observatory’s grounds. There, scientists will be able to monitor weather and climate phenomena.
The equipment will be available to scientists from various countries
The observatory was restored by the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University in collaboration with Polish partners. Ukrainian and Polish researchers will continue their joint work, but the center will not be restricted to them alone. Any research team will be able to apply to conduct research there.
In other words, Pip Ivan is set to become an open platform for researchers from various universities and countries. They will be able to come here to work with state-of-the-art equipment and conduct their own research. Ukraine and Poland also plan to develop the Carpathians as a shared space for science and education. Areas of cooperation include joint scientific projects, student and faculty exchanges, and support for young scientists.
How the Observatory Was Restored
The history of the observatory on Pip Ivan dates back to before World War II. It was built in 1938 as a research station for the University of Warsaw. After the Soviet takeover, the building fell into disrepair. Eventually, only ruins remained of the observatory, which stood atop the mountain for decades.
Ukraine and Poland launched a joint project to restore the observatory in 2012. Despite the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, work on the project continued. Now, the restored building has a new purpose—it has become the foundation for an international scientific center.
Ukraine and Poland Are Expanding Their Cooperation
During the center’s opening, Ukraine and Poland signed a declaration on further cooperation. This goes beyond the work of a single observatory. The parties aim to expand joint projects in science and education, engage young researchers, and create more opportunities for international collaboration.
The new center on Pip Ivan is set to become one such platform. Here, scientists will be able to work with state-of-the-art equipment, conduct research, and exchange expertise regardless of which university or country they come from. Andriy Butenko announced this on his Facebook page.
