In the Lviv region, stork chicks need to be rescued and treated after their nest was destroyed
In the Lviv region, a stork's nest containing four chicks collapsed under the weight of the birds.
According to him, the incident occurred in one of the mountain villages.
The chicks were already quite grown but could not yet fly, so when the nest fell, they found themselves in a dangerous situation: three got stuck in tree branches, and one fell to the ground.
Local residents initially tried to help the birds on their own—they removed them from the trees, took them home, and temporarily fed them until animal rescue volunteers arrived.
At the scene, the volunteers also found an adult stork near the destroyed nest; according to eyewitnesses, the stork had lost its chicks and was waiting disoriented near the ruins.
According to Zalipsky, two chicks suffered serious injuries—one has an open fracture of a leg, and the other has a damaged wing. Two others are in a state of stress.
He noted that one of the injured birds has already had its limb set, but complex treatment, possible surgeries, and a long rehabilitation process lie ahead.
The animal rescue volunteer also emphasized that such incidents can be prevented. If residents discover nests on power poles that pose a safety hazard, they are advised to contact utility companies, which can install special metal platforms to safely relocate the nests, thereby protecting both the birds and the power grid.
The incident was reported by Orest Zalipsky, director of the Lviv shelter “Home for Rescued Animals.”
Earlier, on April 5–6, the previous occupants—Odarka and Hrytsyk—returned to the nest located within the Pyriatyn National Nature Park, where a new pair of storks—Kvitka and Lel—had formed on April 2.
Storks, among the most revered birds in Ukraine, are beginning to return to the Chernobyl zone, heralding the arrival of spring.
