Backup water supply systems will be established in southern Ukraine

The government has adopted a decision to strengthen water supply in Ukraine’s southern regions and prepare for potential periods of low water levels. The document calls for the replenishment of Danube lakes, the modernization of water infrastructure, and the creation of backup pumping systems designed to ensure a rapid response in the event of a water crisis.

This was reported with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Economy.

Water Supply Program through 2030

The Cabinet of Ministers has adopted a decision aimed at strengthening water supply to southern regions and preparing for potential periods of low water. The government plans to implement a set of measures, including the forced filling of Danube lakes and the creation of backup water supply systems for rapid response in the event of a worsening water management situation.

In 2026, plans call for replenishing the Katlabug and Kytay lakes in the Odesa region using stationary pumping stations. There are also plans to supply water to the Nechayanske Reservoir in the Mykolaiv region.

In addition, the government intends to purchase mobile diesel pumping stations, which will be used as backup resources during low-water periods or other crisis situations in the water sector. These are planned to be deployed not only in 2026 but also in the future—to enable a rapid response to potential risks.

The decision will be implemented as part of the State Target Program for Comprehensive Water Supply to Areas Affected by Military Actions, which runs through 2030. The document provides for the modernization of water management infrastructure, the creation of alternative reservoirs for water storage, and the enhancement of the resilience of water supply systems.

As noted by Iryna Ovcharenko, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine, the issue of stable water supply for the southern regions is critically important for both the population and the agricultural sector.

"We must strengthen the resilience of the water sector, create backup water supply mechanisms, and respond promptly to the risks of water scarcity. This decision will ensure a more stable water supply for communities and support economic resilience in the southern arid regions," she emphasized.

It is expected that the implementation of the planned measures will help improve the reliability of water supply during dry periods, reduce environmental risks, and establish a more sustainable water management system in southern Ukraine.

Japan has provided Kyiv with equipment to ensure an uninterrupted water supply.

Japan will provide Ukraine with over 7,000 units of computer and multimedia equipment, including personal computers, interactive panels, and laptops, for 382 vocational colleges and schools.

Japan has expressed interest in Ukrainian attack drones. Tokyo is considering purchasing them for its own Self-Defense Forces due to their proven effectiveness in combat against Russia.
