In the Poltava region, a woman contracted botulism after receiving "beauty injections"
The first case of iatrogenic botulism has been reported in the Poltava region—the illness was not caused by food but occurred following a cosmetic procedure. The woman was hospitalized after receiving “beauty injections” at a private clinic. The patient’s condition was stabilized thanks to a rapid diagnosis and the administration of a special antitoxin. This was reported on Facebook by the Poltava Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
This is the first recorded case of botulism in the Poltava region following a cosmetic procedure. The woman fell ill after receiving so-called “beauty injections” at a private cosmetic clinic.
Doctors note that this is the first such case in the region’s history. Previously, botulism in the Poltava region had only been recorded after the consumption of hazardous foods—most often fish or homemade preserves. This time, the cause was a medical procedure.
After the procedure, the woman became ill and was hospitalized. She is currently in the hospital. Doctors assess her condition as moderate. “Thanks to the timely diagnosis, the patient was administered botulinum antitoxin, which stabilized her condition,” the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
Experts explain that iatrogenic botulism can occur after the administration of drugs containing botulinum toxin. It is precisely these agents that are often used in cosmetology for wrinkle correction and other procedures.
Doctors once again remind the public that such injections should only be administered in certified clinics by specialists who have the appropriate qualifications and licenses. This is the second case of botulism in the Poltava region since the beginning of 2026. The first was linked to the consumption of dried fish.
Doctors urge people not to ignore the early symptoms of botulism. These include weakness, blurred vision, dry mouth, and difficulty swallowing or speaking. In severe cases, the disease can affect the respiratory muscles and be life-threatening.
